Ok, y’all, here’s a pet peeve of mine

I just have to say it… I’m Southern and it’s a pet peeve:
Why are there so many people that spell it ya’ll instead of y’all?

It’s a contraction of “you all”; you put the apostrophe where the letters are missing.
You don’t make “it is” into i’ts, do you? No, of course not.
Kids learn this concept in elementary school. I don’t see what’s so hard about this.

(Sorry, I don’t know where that soapbox came from or how it got under me. Honest. I’ll stand over here now…)

  1. So, a friend on FaceBook suggested that there are people who are making a contraction for “ya all” instead of “you all”, thus “ya’ll” would be an appropriate contraction.

Ok, I’ll take that as a reasonable argument. I still don’t have to like it. ;)
